Rates & costs
Mombasa to Juba transport costs: every charge, listed
The freight rate is often less than half the total. Here is every charge that can arise on a Mombasa to Juba move, and which organisation levies it.
Importers routinely budget the ocean freight and the road freight, then get surprised by everything in between. This is the full list.
Charges levied by the shipping line
| Charge | What it is | Refundable? |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean freight | The sea leg to Mombasa | No |
| Origin and destination terminal handling | Terminal charges at each end | No |
| Container deposit | Security on the line's equipment | Yes, on clean return |
| Demurrage | Container still in the terminal past the free days | No |
| Detention | Container outside the terminal, not yet returned | No |
| Documentation fee | Bill of lading issuance and amendments | No |
Deposits, detention and demurrage are set and held by the line, not by your forwarder.
How detention and demurrage work
Charges levied by Kenya Ports Authority
Shore handling, wharfage and storage are charged according to the published KPA tariff, which applies different scales to domestic and transit containers and gives transit cargo a longer free storage period.
Check the current tariff rather than a figure quoted on somebody else's website. KPA revises it from time to time, and waivers and changes get announced periodically.
Charges relating to customs in Kenya
- Transit bond or guarantee costs, where the cargo moves under a transit regime (see transit bonds)
- Clearing agent fees for lodging the declaration
- Cargo tracking, where charged separately
Our charges
The road leg from Mombasa to Juba, plus any handling and coordination services listed against each published rate row.
Charges in South Sudan
- Import duty, assessed on the customs value at the rate for your classification
- VAT / sales tax and any excise applicable to the goods
- Clearing agent fees at destination
- Certificate of Conformity and any sector permit costs
- Final delivery and offloading
Rates of duty and tax are set annually in South Sudan's Financial Act, so the figures that apply are those in force at the date of entry.
Why we don't publish duty percentages
The charges you can actually avoid
Three of the items above are entirely avoidable and account for most cost overruns:
- Storage, caused by cargo sitting while documents are chased
- Demurrage and detention, same cause, different levy
- Valuation disputes, caused by invoices that do not stand up
All three are problems created before shipment. Every day spent getting documents right before the vessel arrives saves money on two clocks simultaneously.
Ask for a landed cost, not a freight rate
If you want a number you can plan against, ask us for a landed cost breakdown and give us the HS code. We will tell you which lines we can price firmly, which are set by third parties, and which depend on an assessment we cannot make for you.
