How air freight is priced
Air cargo is charged per kilogram against a minimum, and the kilograms that count are chargeable weight: the greater of actual gross weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight converts the space a shipment occupies into a weight equivalent, using the industry divisor applied by the carrier. A light, bulky carton therefore costs more than its scale weight suggests.
Rates break downwards by weight band. A consignment just under a break point often costs more in total than the same consignment padded up to the next break. If your shipment is close to a band edge, ask us to price it both ways.
Beyond the freight itself there are usually airline and terminal charges, security screening and handling at both ends. The table states what each rate includes and excludes.
What flies and what does not
Suitable for air:
- Spare parts and components that have stopped a site or a vehicle (see our spare parts service)
- Medical supplies, diagnostics and laboratory consumables
- Electronics, phones and high value small goods
- Documents, samples and pre production items
- Perishables, where the cold chain can be maintained end to end
Needs special handling and separate quotation:
- Dangerous goods of any class, declared and packed to IATA requirements
- Lithium batteries, including batteries built into equipment. They are regulated even when the product looks completely ordinary.
- Pharmaceuticals with temperature requirements
- Anything magnetised, pressurised, flammable or aerosol
Do not underdeclare any of these. A misdeclared battery or aerosol can get a consignment offloaded and the shipper reported.

Tell us what you are shipping
Send us the cargo description, weight or volume, and the pickup and delivery addresses. We reply with a written rate, the transit time and the documents you will need.
Documents
Air moves fast enough that documentation, not transport, becomes the critical path. For a Nairobi to Juba air shipment you will generally need a commercial invoice, a packing list, the air waybill, a Kenyan export declaration, and any permit the goods require.
Goods within the scope of South Sudan's PVoC programme still need a Certificate of Conformity issued before shipment, regardless of how they travel. Flying something in does not remove that requirement.
Air or road?
Work it out on total cost of delay, not on freight rate alone. Road carries weight far more cheaply; air removes days. The decision usually turns on what the cargo is worth per kilogram and what a week of waiting costs you.
