What makes Mombasa different
A Nairobi load starts when we collect. A Mombasa load usually starts when a vessel discharges, and the port stage has its own economics. Two separate clocks run from arrival: the shipping line's free time before detention on its equipment, and Kenya Ports Authority's free storage period before storage charges accrue on the cargo in the yard. They are set by different parties and they are not the same length.
If your cargo is being unpacked at Mombasa and moved as part of a groupage load, the clock still applies to the container it arrived in. Plan the unpacking before the free days run out, not after.
How detention and demurrage work
The corridor
Mombasa to Juba is the full length of the Northern Corridor. The road runs Mombasa, Voi, Nairobi, then northwest through Nakuru and Eldoret to Malaba, across Uganda via Kampala and Gulu, and into South Sudan at Nimule. It is a long haul, and the transit time reflects both the distance and the three borders.
Pricing
As on the Nairobi lane, groupage is billed on chargeable weight or on cubic metres, whichever is greater, against a minimum shipment charge, with a separate rate band for sensitive cargo. The longer distance is reflected in the per kilogram and per CBM figures in the table above.
For a full container moving straight through from the terminal, the container rate is almost always the better answer than a per kilogram road rate:
- Mombasa to Juba container transport
- 20ft container transport to Juba
- 40ft container transport to Juba

Kenyan export or transit cargo?
This matters more on the Mombasa lane than anywhere else, because both kinds of cargo leave from the same place.
- Goods bought in Kenya and trucked out of Mombasa are a Kenyan export. See Kenya export clearance
- Goods that arrived from abroad and are continuing to South Sudan move under a transit regime, under bond and under electronic cargo tracking, and are not entered for home use in Kenya. See transit cargo through Kenya
