International transit
Shipping from India to South Sudan via Kenya
India is the closest major manufacturing origin to East Africa by sea, which makes it the fastest of the big Asian origins into Mombasa. It is also a common source of the goods that attract the most regulatory attention at destination.
The route
Loading is usually at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Kolkata. The Arabian Sea crossing to Mombasa is short by comparison with an East Asian origin, so transit times are materially better than from China. At Mombasa the container is discharged, declared for transit and trucked north to Juba.

What typically ships on this lane
- Pharmaceuticals and medical consumables
- Agricultural machinery, pumps and irrigation equipment
- Steel, pipes and construction materials
- Textiles and garments
- Rice, pulses, spices and processed foods
- Vehicle parts and motorcycles
Three of those categories sit squarely inside South Sudan's regulated goods regime: pharmaceuticals, food and medical equipment.
Pharmaceuticals and food need their own permissions
Medicines, medical devices and food are regulated at destination beyond ordinary customs requirements. The Drug and Food Control Authority Act establishes the authority responsible for these categories. The Trade Information Hub sets out the procedural steps for regulated imports, including the registrations, licences and letters of no objection involved.
Do not treat these as paperwork to be collected on arrival. Registration and licensing take time, and the goods cannot clear without them.
See regulated goods in the clearance guide
Certificate of Conformity
South Sudan's PVoC programme requires a Certificate of Conformity for goods within scope, obtained in the country of export before shipment.
Indian exporters are generally familiar with conformity programmes of this kind, but confirm the specific South Sudan requirement rather than assuming an existing certificate for another market will serve.

Documents to check before loading
- Commercial invoice and packing list that match the cargo exactly
- Bill of lading with the correct consignee
- Certificate of origin
- Certificate of Conformity where the goods are within scope
- Sector documents: drug registration, analysis certificates, fumigation or phytosanitary certificates for agricultural goods
- For machinery: technical description sufficient to classify it correctly
