Mombasa to Juba Container Transport
The main way full containers reach South Sudan. This page covers the whole chain from the terminal gate to the consignee's yard in Juba, including the charges that are not ours and the deadlines that catch people out.

What an FCL move from Mombasa involves
1. Arrival and declaration
The line files the manifest and your declaration is lodged against it. That is either a Kenyan import entry, or a transit declaration if the goods are continuing to South Sudan. Under the Single Customs Territory arrangement, cargo destined for a partner state is declared and taxed at destination and moves on a single regional bond with electronic cargo tracking.
South Sudan is not an EAC partner state in the same sense as the SCT members, so the exact regime applied to your container depends on its routing and declaration. We confirm this per shipment rather than assuming.

2. Delivery order and container deposit
The shipping line issues a delivery order once its freight and charges are settled. Most lines also require a container deposit, which is refundable security against the equipment being returned on time and undamaged. The deposit is set by the line, held by the line, and refunded by the line. It isn't a freight charge and it isn't ours.
3. Port charges and release
Shore handling, wharfage and any accrued storage are payable to Kenya Ports Authority. The published tariff applies different scales to domestic and transit containers.
4. Collection and the road leg
The container is collected from the terminal, the seal is checked and recorded, and the unit runs north on the corridor through Nairobi, Malaba, Kampala, Gulu and Nimule to Juba.
5. Offloading and empty return
At destination the container is offloaded within the agreed free time. The empty then has to get back to where the line wants it. Who is responsible for that return, and who pays for it, is the most important thing to agree before the container moves. Juba is a long way from anywhere the line wants its box back. The rate table states the position for each rate.
Deposits, detention and demurrage
Three different charges that people routinely confuse:
| Charge | Levied by | Triggered by |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Kenya Ports Authority | Cargo sitting in the port yard beyond KPA's free period |
| Demurrage | Shipping line | Container still inside the terminal beyond the line's free days |
| Detention | Shipping line | Container outside the terminal, not yet returned empty |

If you don't have enough to fill a container, LCL or groupage is usually cheaper than paying for air you don't use:
