Why most Mombasa air cargo routes through Nairobi
Juba's air cargo connectivity out of Kenya is concentrated at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Capacity and frequency to Juba are materially better there than from Moi International Airport in Mombasa.
In practice that means an air shipment starting at Mombasa usually becomes one of two things:
- Trucked to Nairobi, flown from Nairobi. The cargo moves by road up the A109, is tendered at JKIA and flies out from there. This is the common arrangement, and the rate reflects the road leg plus the air leg.
- A direct Mombasa departure, where capacity exists on the day for that cargo.
We will tell you which one applies to your shipment rather than quoting a direct service we cannot run. If the Nairobi routing is what makes sense, we will say so and price it that way.
When Mombasa air makes sense
- The cargo is already in Mombasa and is urgent enough that the road leg to Juba is too slow
- A sea shipment has arrived late and the consignee needs part of the consignment immediately
- High value, light goods where the air premium is small against the cargo value
When it doesn't
- Heavy or bulky cargo, where volumetric weight will make it uneconomic
- Anything that can wait for the road
- Full containers, which should move as FCL to Juba
